So it’s no surprise Haley used a persuasive technique that stood out from the rest. With the risk of sounding overbearing, Haley said, “ I want to make two things clear: First, this is South Carolina’s statehouse, it is South Carolina’s historic moment and this will be South Carolina’s decision.”(Haley 16) This is an obvious use of the persuasive technique, Ethos. The majority of probate inventories assessed the estates of the male heads of a household. This stems from the fact that all of the colonies in North American followed the English law of coverture. The law of coverture allowed that a married woman and her husband were legally considered a single economic unit. This meant that once a woman married regardless of what assets of monetary value she brought with her into the marriage, she was now under the guardianship of her husband.…

The south’s black codes started during the reconstruction era, when the blacks were freed from slavery. The southern whites did not like how the recently freed blacks had the same amount of rights they had, so legislatures across the south passed black codes. Black codes are laws intended to restrict the freedom and opportunities of African Americans (Hart, 135). The codes restricted the black to have very few rights, such as owning land, marry file lawsuits and work for wages. the codes also enforced workers for former slave owners by requiring former slaves to sign yearly labor contracts, and if they did not they would be forced to work for free.…

Gary W. Gallagher introduces his book by stating propositions made by other historians, along with their arguments and sources, as to why the Confederacy lost the Civil War. Most of these arguments pointed to lack of desire, or commitment for independence. These historians made their proposals by working backwards from the surrender of the South to the beginning of war. Gallagher’s argument is that a majority of citizens in the Confederacy had the will and determination to fight for independence to the bitter end.…

He believed that the people of a state or several states, acting in a democratically elected convention, had the retained power to veto any act of the federal government which violated the Constitution and explained that in The South Carolina Exposition and Protest, “If it be conceded, as it must be by every one who is the least conversant with our institutions, that the sovereign powers delegated are divided between the General and State Governments, and that the latter hold their portion by the same tenure as the former, it would seem impossible to deny to the States the right of deciding on the infractions of their powers, and the proper remedy to be applied for their correction. The right of judging, in such cases, is an essential attribute of sovereignty, of which the States cannot be divested without losing their sovereignty itself, and being…

There is no doubt that the American Civil War had a considerable impact on our society. The 13th Amendment would be passed banning slavery; And the 15th Amendment would give voting rights to all male citizens, anyone born in the United States, regardless of race. The civil war also kick started the women’s rights act which would lead to women being able to vote in 1920. Unfortunately the conflict also formed the Ku Klux Klan, and the passing of the Jim Crow Laws, both of which would keep racism strong for decades. Today though, we see the problems with racism and it is generally frowned upon.…

In Apostles of Disunion, Charles Dew discusses how he originally thought that states’ rights were the predominant reason that the Civil War occurred. This point of view stemmed from his readings as a boy and his ancestor’s experiences with the war. The central idea behind the authors writing of the book is his analysis of the letters and speeches that the secession commissioners wrote, in which he sought the reasons other than states’ rights to their secession from the Union. Correspondingly, he argues for the centrality of race and slavery as the reasons for the South’s secession. What’s more, is the reasoning behind why the author is writing this book and his projected achievements from doing so.…

How does the way we use borders affect our lives in the world today and the lives of those around us? Living in a world that has so many borders, physical, social, political, and mental forces us to choose between building borders up—causing conflict—or, tearing them down—bringing peace—to one another. How do we understand them so we can better navigate the roles they play in our lives? Looking at borders inside and out we are, in a way, a sort of gatekeeper for all of the borders we experience. Acknowledging our role as gatekeepers brings into focus the choices we, as humans, need to make about what is important versus what is not concerning the various borders in our lives.…
