Ethnocentrism is so ingrained in our society that we try to ignore the fact that we are cultural oppressors to others. We as humans put ourselves and our own culture on a pedestal. If you do not identify as us then you must become one of us or at least rearrange your culture to fit to ours. In the novel, The Martian Chronicles, as well as other nonfiction sources such as Language Chauvinism, and Coca-Cola It's Beautiful the thematic message displayed throughout these sources is that humans expect others to change to fit ourselves and this expectation can lead to destructive actions. By having that emmeche disrespect happen the foreigner would suffer consequences, so why is it any different when the Earth men came? Even if humans were extinct and Martians came and vomited on the White House, we would still feel angry about the disrespect. Nobody cared that Biggs vomited on a important Martian building disrespecting their culture and beliefs. No one punished the crew members when they were celebrating when they knew the Martians died because them and showing no respect for them. Another example of this thematic message is in the non-fiction article Language Chauvinism by Cooper Thompson. In this article Thompson is talking about how one day while listening in on a conversation between a french waitress and an american man, the american man wanted his coffee the way he usually gets it at starbucks. The only problem was that he was at a small french cafe where they don't sell the type of coffee that he wanted. In the Martian Chronicles, the author was able to integrate this message into a chapter called the Locusts. The Locusts talks about how when the Earth men come and the second they step foot onto mars they change it to fit their needs without consulting the last living Martians beforehand. It also talks about how when they come they are like a swarm of locust just eating up the resources and then moving on to the next place. “The rockets set the bony meadows afire, turned rock to lava, turned wood to charcoal, transmitted water to steam, made sand and silica into green glass which lay like shattered mirrors reflecting the invasion, all about. (Bradbury) In this quote The Earth people don't care about the Martian culture they just care about restarting their normal lives again somewhere else and expecting mars to be theirs to make Earth again repeating the process on Earth. Another example of destruction as a result of ethnocentrism of others is in the article Coca-Cola’s “It’s Beautiful” Super Bowl Ad Brings Out Some Ugly Americans. The article talks about the ad that was played during the Superbowl. THe message was everyone can share and become peaceful through Coke. Coca Cola saw this opportunity to bring together everyone by having different cultures sing America the Beautiful in different languages. The idea was that we are all Americans and that we are the same whether we speak different
