The New York Post published an article titled, “New York stands with Israel” where they put a quote from the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, saying “Hamas and other terrorist organizations continue to threaten Israel” and then the author of the article wrote, “We couldn’t agree more.” They are attempting to convey that Hamas threatens the livelihood of Israel. This is untrue for a multitude of reasons. Hamas was established as an Israeli resistance group in 1987, almost 40 years after Israel committed the following horrifying ethnic cleansings: the Deir Yassin Massacre, the Tantura Massacre, the Arab-Israeli War and the Nakba (Pappe, 2007). The farmers are under a nonstop risk of being beaten, shot at, having their water contaminated, their land torched and their trees uprooted (Karkar, 2007). Israel is responsible for the eradication, torture and ethnic cleansing of Palestinian people, along with an uncountable amount of war crimes (Said, 1979). Israel controls Palestine’s drinking water, education, access to the sea (Al Mezan, 2013), has taken thousands of political prisoners (Adameer, 2014), and is involved in systematic torture (Falk, 2013). Yet, it still manages to gather sympathy, support, financial assistance and political partnership with the wealthiest western countries in the world. America is giving Israel three billion dollars a year until 2018 (Obama, 2014). They have also built and supported orphanages, mosques, medical centers, and food banks (Roy, 2013). They have also created several committees to benefit the community, from charity counsels, sports classes, student unions and mosque classes. Hamas also delivered thousands of free meals to poor families during the month of Ramadan (Aljazeera, 2011). Palestine’s lack of resources due to the Israeli blockade has left other charities in shambles and unable to provide necessary materials for the citizens of Palestine. Therefore, they don’t have many resources. Yet, Hamas has still managed to fill the role of a multitude of other charities that ceased to function for a variety of reasons (Roy, 2013). They have gracefully discovered a way to establish a crucial administration that delivered much needed aid to Palestinian people. Hamas has created underground tunnels that they use to smuggle in life-saving medicine, clothing, food, fuel and other supplies (Roy, 2013).
