Gene therapy is an experimental technique that uses gens to help prevent or cure/treat diseases found in the body. It changes the expression of how a person’s genes function. This technique is the future of allowing doctors to use a corrected gene by simply inserting it into the patient’s cells to treat disorders and help make the organs work properly. This minimizes the need to use drugs or perform surgery. This technique is risky, and is still undergoing experiments to make sure this is a safe and effective device. If a mutated or a faulty gene is found a functioning gene it inserted into the gene/cell. Although the gene …show more content…
An ethical issue related to this technology is the consideration of an individual’s religious belief. Many patients that are exceptional candidates for gene therapy have a religious belief that causes an issue about undergoing the therapy. Some religions believe they are playing with god, or tampering with nature. (Society, Religion, Technology Projects, 2010)
2) Another ethical issue that arises is the issue of the potential risk of the germline passing onto future generation’s when the parent’s eggs and sperm cells and changes due to this therapy. Some cases of this therapy changes eggs, and sperm cells. The changes made to the cell and sperm cells are not being thorually looked into, which creates worrisome in the parents. Some are already worried that the gene is already passing onto the unborn child. When the gene transfers onto the unborn child diseases can occur to them. The worrisome is increasing making this an important and serious ethical issue. (NIH,2006)
