The potential use of adult and embryonic stem cells can be applied in biomedical research and in medicine. One way in which stem cells can …show more content…
One of the challenges facing stem cell research is that much is unknown about these cells yet, like the potential hazards. Controlling stem cells isn’t easy either, but “in the future these tiny cells may significantly advance disease treatment and expand knowledge of the basic body processes” ("Obstacles Facing Stem Cell Research”). Funding is also a challenge for researchers to obtain from the government. They are not willing to fund stem cell research fully because it gives rise to so many ethical issues ("Obstacles Facing Stem Cell Research”). When adult stem cells are found, they usually are not found in large numbers. This creates a challenge for researchers because it is hard to get the cells to grow which is what they need to treat diseases. Adult stem cell’s ability to form into different types of cells is also limited. A challenge facing embryonic stem cell research is the ethical issues that it brings up. Scientists need to figure out how these cells reproduce and work better before they use them for transplants because when transplanted they may not work how they are expected to ("Obstacles Facing Stem Cell …show more content…
The first method is called a Bone Marrow harvest. Originally the collection was done by having the patient be put under a general anesthetic. Then doctors would use a series of needles to get the bone marrow directly from the large bones, usually the pelvis. This procedure is fairly simple. The patient feels no pain during the procedure but will experience pain for a few days after the procedure ("Method of
