Stem cell research has offered many therapeutic options for debilitating diseases. Despite the stigma surrounding stem cell research, it continues to grow rapidly through its invasive research. It had elucidated the many benefits along with the potential of overcoming the controversy and playing a large role in shaping the future of medicine. Stem cell research is a topic that everyone across the world has his or her own view or opinion on. The issue that many people have is that it is morally and or ethically wrong. Little does the people who stand against the issue is that it could be the next thing in modern medicine.
Stem cell research dates back to the late 1800’s although there are …show more content…
Stem cell research can potentially help to treat medical issues like, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and degenerative diseases (OccupyTheory par. 5). It can also possibly find the cure to cancer by finding what cells carry cancer and replacing them (OccupyTheory par. 8) Stem cell research is getting to the point in advancements and research where researchers will be able to replace or repair organs which has to potential to save someone’s life (OccupyTheory par. 15). One of the main causes of death in America is heart disease, but stem cell research has to potential to stop this, you can replace the cells or if needed to replace the whole heart (OccupyTheory par. 4). It is slowly shedding light on heart disease and finding the cure to cancer, as well as finding the cure to degenerative diseases. But, with every advantage there are always disadvantages. In stem cell research, one of the disadvantages is a researcher and scientists don’t know all the outcomes yet. They don’t know what may happen, or if what they are trying will work. They don’t know the outcome of treatments, and how people will react to treatments since everyone may react differently. Another disadvantage is that scientists have to use embryonic stem cells, not adult, which causes a very large problem with humans’ opinions (OccupyTheory par. 30). This is because; embryonic cells have yet to contract any sort of genetic or inherited disease that an adult cell would already have contracted (O’Brien, Interview). There is a large controversy surrounding the research as
