Fresh Direct Anyone who has ever tried to navigate the streets of New York City in an automobile will find that driving and parking are two big daily challenges. Fresh Direct trucks that are double parked in front large apartment buildings are a prime target for the NYC Parking Violations officers who ticket Fresh Direct trucks to the tune of “hundreds of thousands of dollars.” It is a cost of doing business that the company absorbs and does not pass on to customers. The rising cost of fueling the trucks is included on orders as a fuel surcharge. Environmental issues that Fresh Direct has to address are from the emissions of the trucks and the cardboard box packaging of their products. …show more content…
They have begun to use 100% recycled paper products, however even those boxes have to be disposed. There is a rising concern that city sanitation services were being used to dispose of the boxes. Fresh Direct should institute a system where the cardboard boxes can be returned to them for disposal.
As the trucks idle while the deliveries are being made, the engines are spewing out fumes. There is concern that the fumes are polluting the air in their communities. The double parked trucks also clog up street traffic on narrow residential streets. Environmentally conscientious consumers feel that Fresh Direct is building its success on the use of city services that it is not paying for. There is little to no coverage in minority neighborhoods. Critics say that Fresh Direct will not deliver to people in public housing and other neighborhoods that have most black and Latino populations.
Wages are an issue as well. Fresh Direct was not paying drivers the same wages as other unionized workers. Recently Fresh Direct drivers did join Local 348 to get better wages and other benefits. However, other workers are not unionized. Foreign born plant workers were asked to verify their status and when they could not, they were let go. That might be true, but the very nature of the business is truck delivery. If the company factored the cost of the tickets into the deliveries, they would probably lose customers who would not want to pay the higher prices. If Fresh Direct donated the boxes to schools, someone who probably complain that they were getting free advertising because the Fresh Direct logo is on the boxes. If they started to market directly to the minority neighborhoods, there is no doubt that critics would call them racists. It would be virtually impossible to do anything to dispel that criticism. They should simply include those neighborhoods in their routes and see if they get any additional
