In an article written by Arthur Dobrin, D.S.W. (2012) who is a retired professor of Ethics at Hofstra University and now writes books about Ethics. In this article, there is questions under each principle that can help determine if the decision is ethical or not. “What impact is my behavior having on the world?”(Dobrin, 2012) In this case, the choice not to give a discount affects the patient’s family negatively because they have to pay more. However, it positively affects my company which employees over 30 people by keeping our income. The income is needed to pay for the company’s overhead and the employee’s salary. Am I doing more good or harm by my behavior?(Dobrin, 2012) I am doing good in my behavior by keeping income for my company, explaining the cost both up front to the patient and after with her family. In addition, I also offered an interest free repayment option stretched farther out than our typical options to help lower the financial burden. Is my behavior making the world a better place? (Dobrin, 2012) My choice helps ensure 30 families can continue to eat and have disposable income. The patient learns more about their insurance and what informed consents to look deeper into next time they are in these situations. What duties do I owe? (Dobrin, 2012) I owe a duty to my company to make sure I collect and perform my job to the best of my abilities. I owe a duty to my patients to make sure I give them all the tools at my disposal to make and informed decision on their health care. What are my ethical principles telling me I should do? (Dobrin, 2012) My ethical principles tell me that I should stand my ground but be as empathetic as possible to help another human in need. I cannot steal from my company to help another and I cannot risk breaking the law putting my family at risk to aid another. What does reason require of me regarding my treatment of others?(Dobrin, 2012) Reason requires me to do the best that I can to help someone within my means. This does not mean that I should risk the wellbeing of the company or myself to help
