Essay On Women In The Military Draft

Women have embraced having equal rights as men, but having equal rights also creates a demand of duties. The selective service should be no different. Women have proved they are able to perform the task that the military requires. In today’s society there are ways women can contribute that don’t involve combat. A gender-neutral draft will help broaden expectations and recognition of what women can do. However, there are concerns whether women are physically able to perform the task required. Having women required to sign up for the draft may seem deranged, but women want necessarily be put in the front lines; now that all combat positions are open its almost fair they sign up, and having a gender neutrality act will show that women are capable to serve in the military. However, in the past few years the Pentagon lifted a ban on women serving in combat; this opened up front line positions for all women in the armed services (Fromer par. 1). Now that women are allowed to have any military position, it is perfectly reasonable that they should be listed for the draft. In 2016 President Obama voiced his opinion that he believes women registering for the draft is the most logical step America can take, in that women are allowed to fight in any combat position now (“Obama signs”). Since American men have to bear such a responsibility, women should too now that the military field is equal. Women are now equal to men in the realm of the military, so there is no reason to exclude them from the selective services. Men and women are allowed to serve in all military positions, the only difference is that men are required to register with the selective services at the age of eighteen.
