Essay On Tutoring Experience

Decent Essays
My parents decided to move to the United States from China when I was in elementary school. Learning English was difficult because neither of my parents knew any English nor have I had exposure to this new language. At school, I couldn’t understand anything the teachers and kids were saying. Most of my early communications were through body movements and gestures. Realizing this dilemma, my mom decided to take me to tutoring classes to help break the language barrier. There, I had a Chinese tutor whom I could actually speak to and help guide me through this learning experience. In my tutoring sessions, I had to learn English from the very beginning. I learned about the twenty six alphabets, vowels, and handwriting. Every session improved my

My education has prevented my abilities to further advance my skills and aspirations of becoming a leading web developer. I am proud to come to this one of the greatest city in the world, however, there was a time I was questioning myself…

A memorable literary work that I’ve read this year was Li-Young Lee’s poem “Persimmons”. I had an interesting experience reading this poem because I got to see this situation unfold through someone else’s point of view; never have I read a literary work that I could deeply relate to as much as I did in this poem and to the author. Li had to learn a new language and change in order to understand it, he had the conflict is the language barrier that Lee encounters in his life and the theme of assimilation in a new social environment. The single major conflict in the poem was the language barrier between Lee and other people. From personal experience I know it’s hard to adjust in a new social environment, especially when there is a vast difference in something as important as language.…

Like most children who grew up in a bilingual environment, I had trouble discerning Japanese and English when I was growing up in California, since I spent most of the time with my mother’s family. Because of that, any English I absorbed through PBS shows was mashed together with Japanese to form Japanglish. Then I briefly attended preschool in Naha, which made it even worse. I barely made it to elementary school. My kindergarten teacher recommended me to stay another year, but my parents refused to allow it.…

Although my family migrated to the United States when I was two, I did not speak English fluently for a long time. My time in ESL as an elementary schooler reflected years of isolation from my peers, leaving me and a few others as outcasts from the classroom. In three years, my English improved, but interactions with my classmates were limited. Even though I managed to garner some friends, I felt a wall of detachment every time the ESL teacher came to pick me up from English class. After second grade, I decided to switch elementary schools, determined to make it through the school year without ESL, become friends with my classmates, and maintain my friendships.…
