Without the gothic aspect of the castle and its dark and bizarre interior, “The Masque of the Red Death” wouldn’t have the same mood or affect on the reader. Gothic architecture came from Romanesque art and began to develop in the 12th century in France. By 13th century the only style of building in northwestern Europe was Gothic. Later Gothic architecture and art has spread all over western and northern parts of Europe. Between 12th and 17th century, using Gothic style the greatest number of great cathedrals and churches, that the world had ever seen, were built. Gothic architecture is marked by its high stone walls, bleak towers, tunnels, tall and narrow windows, and deep moats. The interior tends to be heavy with a lot of details, which are combinations of exquisite and brusque. Wood and roughly processed stoneware fill the Gothic interior along with massive wooden furniture decorated with carvings. Gothic carvings mirror Prince Prospero’s personality because the carvings represent a warding off of bad things. Just as Prospero is trying to ward off the Red Death. Gothic style is also notable for its uniqueness and the prevalence of dark and gloomy tones.
