The Impact of Desegregation on African Americans
Brown vs. Board of Education was a court case in 1954 that desegregated the blacks and the whites. This case was supposed to be for the betterment of blacks but it did the opposite. Black teachers often had no jobs after desegregation due to the black school houses being shut down. Black teachers were not wanted in schools (Heim). Black students were neglected by white teachers and students (Gold 40). Black students did not get the attention they deserved (Heim). Desegregation was a struggle for African Americans because of racism is the schools, the inability of blacks to find jobs, and the systematic racism in the government.
Now that blacks and whites were together, black students were more open to racism during the school day (Hartman 38). During the day, black and white students would be in separate school houses which did not allow the white students to pick on the black students. That changed when black students started attending white schools. Some white teachers were unwilling to teach black students (38). Most black students would have to sit in a separate roped off section of the classroom, away from the other students (Gold 39). …show more content…
