The first symbol is of the conch. The conch was a large shell which Piggy and Ralph found in the beginning of the novel. The fire was used in several parts of the story, such as cooking, heating and a signal to retrieve assistance from the ships passing by. "If a ship come by the Island they might notice us. We must make a fire (pg.38)." The fire also shows the responsibility that these boys need but only some of them seem to posses. This is demonstrated when Ralph has Jack and the hunters in control of the fire. However, they neglect keeping the fire ablaze because they wanted to relieve their obsession of death by hunting. " There was a ship out there. You said you would keep the fire going and you let it out They may have seen us we might have gone home (pg.70)!" Ralph’s priorities were different from Jack’s, Ralph prioritized rescue over hunting and has never thought about becoming a hunter himself.
The boys are not yet ready for the responsibility of the Fire and being in charge of themselves. The fire is as a mirror of the boys’ actions. That is as the boys started with good ideals of order and recreating a sense of community eventually all hell broke loose and they lost control of themselves and their own actions.
