Persuasion is an art and one cannot persuade without communication and communication is the foundation of persuasion. The foundation on which persuasion is built on in communication is based on many theories. The weight loss company could start out by telling the consumer that they will lose weight with their product and if they would like to learn more about it they can join their club. They could show testimonials of real people who have lost weight on the program. They can mention the facts up front about joining and tell them the cost or if it is free to join the club. They can mention the cost of the product will depend on how much weight they need to lose. They can mention that there is no obligation to purchase the product by joining. They need to show confidence in their product by stating the facts. The consumer may have pre-set attitudes about weight loss products based on failed attempts to lose weight, so the advertisers need to make it appealing by using a direct approach. A direct approach may use propaganda in order to get the message across. Selective exposure is likely one way to persuade an audience into purchasing a product. "Propaganda is one of the most powerful instrumentalities in the modern world (Lasswell, 1927)."(Petty, R., Briñol, P., & Priester, J., …show more content…
However, this is certainly not always the case. Yes, the fear of drowning may hinder my decision to jump into the ocean off of a cruise ship, but I have a fear of drowning and I still get into a pool because I like to go swimming. One may be considered a fear and the other is considered to be a threat. There is a level of emotion and cognitive processes one goes through before making a decision. The fear appeal first touches on the differences between a fear and a threat. Is this going to endanger you or is it only going to affect you? According to Paul Mongeau's research, "Fear is an emotion and causes physical arousal (Witte, 1992)." (Mongeau, P., 1995) However, a threat is what may come to pass; It is what may happen to you to cause physical harm. So, does fear appeals really work? According to the research, "Suggests that fear-arousing messages work, at least for most audiences and on most occasions." (Mongeau, P., 1995) This observation is based on the level of fear itself. "The stronger the fear appeal, the greater the attitude, intention and behavior changes." (Mongeau, P.,

Rekdal’s it trying to show his audience of those who have “original research on science, technology and medicine” (Social Studies of Science) how sloppy, improper citation is causing bits and pieces of information to be lost causing false legends to circulate as truth. However, according to reporting intern, Charlie Tyson, in his web article, How rumors spread via sloppy citation practices, he writes a summary of what Rekdal has written in his article stating it is also false, and debunked by criminologist. Further he also writes about what he feels is wrong with incorrect citations to his audience of those with higher level education, such as grad students to vice presidents (About Us). Fear means Forget Everything and Run. People have many fears. Can fears motivate people? In my opinion, appeals to fear are the best motivational force, when people are scared into doing the correct thing, forced to think about their future, and think that God will be so mad at them and make them go to hell. Appeals to fear are the best motivational force because some people are scared into doing the correct thing.…

Imagine this. You’re paralyzed, unable to do anything the way you want; unable to achieve new goals, to try new things, or to simply live your life the way you want to because you are restricted. Many times we have a similar reaction to fear. Fear can motivate us to an extent, if used correctly and in small amounts. But more often than not we let fear take over and control us, stopping us from doing what we actually want to achieve.…

Fear appeal is an emotional strategy that creates fear in the audience to motivate them to agree with the rhetor and take action. A fear appeal draws on basic needs that the audience cares for, and presents it as something at risk that can be solved with the rhetor’s idea and direct action. The appeal is an attempt to scare the audience that something bad will happen to their needs if they don’t create change. A fear appeal used on the subject of binge drinking can show that a person could die from alcohol poisoning.…

Fear can lead to many things; it can be the driving factor to terrible occurrences, paranoid investigations, and sudden tension. A devastating example of fear causing negative feats is the Red Scare and the Rosenberg Trial. Americans were afraid of the Soviet Union because they felt threatened and didn’t want communism, and in an act of fearful behavior, sentenced to death two innocent people of involvement with the Soviets. This ended up being pointless, as they were never actually in cahoots with Russia.…

When we communicate, not only do we want other people to understand the message, but also we try to affect their beliefs or actions by using persuasion. Communication always involves at least one message, transmitted by a source, via a medium, to a receiver, within a situational context (Simons, 1976). Persuasion is a way of communication to influence other people to make them to do actions, pursue goals that they would have not otherwise. It differs from other ways to influence for three reasons: (1) it does not imply the use of force, but makes an appeal to the person’s free choices; (2) it claims that the goal or action proposed by the persuader is in the interest of the person being persuaded, and (3) it aims at influencing through communication…
