What A Governor is and The Requirements To Become Governor of Texas The Governor is the highest ranking official in the state of Texas. Although the governors of all the states are different from each other in what they do, the Texas governor signs or vetoes bills that are passed by the legislature, serves as commander-in-chief of the Texas military and assigns Texans that are eligible to state offices. There are certain requirements to become the governor of Texas: To run as the governor of Texas you must be at least 30 years of age; To run for the position you must be a registered citizen of the United States of America; You must also have been a resident of Texas for at least 5 years before the election you plan on running in commences.

Currently, the Texas State Governor does not hold much power compared to other state governors. The reason due to this is that the Texas Constitution of 1876 was written so that the future governors would not be granted as much power. Edmund Davis’s administration (P. 59 Textbook) lead to the Constitution limiting the powers of the governor of Texas as he led a corrupt administration and used the state police and militia to to continue with his regime(P 59). Due to the governor’s powers being stripped from him, they had to be distributed somewhere else and as such they went to many executives. This created what is named a Plural Executive. A Plural Executive is the limiting of the powers of the governor by giving some of the powers to political leaders. This in turn made the future governors of Texas weaker as they are now limited in their powers and as to why they are the weakest compared to other states. He has been the Texas Governor since 2015 (Greg Abott) and due to his skills of leading Texas, has worked to increase the creation of jobs for citizens of Texas. Abott has reduced the billions of dollars in taxes in order for the job creation rate to increase (Abott) as well as making the roads of Texas better and placing his attention on a better education system. All of what Abott has done has made the Texas economy the 10th largest economy in the world. Abott is leading Texas into a path of prosperity with all of his success as a governor. Even with the limiting of powers on a Texas Governor, Abott has proven that much work can be done as long as the individual elected knows how to utilize
