The origin and development of the Texas constitution occurred in 1836 when Texas declared its independence after being governed by Spain and Mexico for a total of 146 years. The first Constitution; The Republic of Texas was ratified after nine years and has been subsequently changed five time since the original draft. Each of these branches holds a different power and no branch is more pow-erful than the other. The reason they are separated into these different branches are because of a system called check and balances. This system was also created by the Na-tional government and its purpose is to ensure each branch power is restrained by the power of another branch. There-fore, no branch is too powerful. This prevents laws and bills from being passed by one branch and not having the au-thority of the other two branches.
The Texas legislative branch is comprised of a Senate and a House of Representatives. The legislative branch have many different functions such as making laws, reallocating legislative seats, redesigning geographical areas (to ensure the populations are nearly equal for the purpose of electing legislators)and to propose constitutional amendments.
