The laws discussed in Chapter 9 of the course textbook, Social and Criminal Justice: A Capstone, are twofold; to protect individual freedoms and to implement criminal justice policies. Criminal justice is based on the development and enforcement of laws, these laws are meant to protect citizens and society. Social justice principles posit that all individuals are entitled to freedom, equality, and human rights, beliefs are clearly enumerated in the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights. Therefore, all parts of the criminal justice system; law enforcement, courts, and corrections must carefully navigate so that both social and criminal justice principles are preserved. The authors discuss the impact criminal justice personnel have upon individuals involved or affected by the system. They state, “criminal justice personnel are in a unique position to have both positive and negative impacts on individual lives, whether intentional or unintentional. The focus of this program is that police and community members build ties and work closely together, their common goals are to identify and address crime issues in the community. The court systems in the US provide solidarity through standardized legal and criminal procedures.
