Rhetorical Devices used by Prentiss: Prentiss (2005) utilizes rhetorical devices to influence her readers, she provides statements that give a negative spin towards Hayden’s work at the Keatley Creek site (Gibbon 2014). Prentiss (2005:178) uses dyshemisms as she critiques Hayden’s argument regarding climate change. She mentions that Hayden merely used a single pollen study and this is problematic since pollen is a poor indicator of short-term variations in climate and even worse when using only one pollen data set (Prentiss 2005:178). This statement gives negative and harsh connotations towards Hayden’s work. The purpose of this was to outline how her work was accurate and not flawed like Hayden made it seem.…

Rhetoric can be analyzed and broken down in various ways, and at times, in ways that the writer did not intend. When a reader begins to analyze a text, they intend to break it down into a matter they will understand. Yet, in several instances the reader does not understand how rhetoric’s role comes into play and how the writer intended to use these rhetorical concepts. In the texts, Writing with Teachers: A Conversation with Peter Elbow by David Bartholomae, and, Being a Writer vs. Being and Academic: A Conflict in Goals by Peter Elbow, rhetorical concepts such as ethos for example, are analyzed by the intended audience to help gain a better understanding of their main goals and the reasons for their stance in the discussion. With this being said, Elbow takes his work to a personal level and emphasizes a better use of ethos than that of the work of Bartholomae, and both use other forms of ethos such as arête, phronesis and eunoia, to better their argument.…

As both of the stories continue to progress the audience seems to get a better sense of understanding of what is happening due to the authors use of characterization in both The Allegory of the Cave and The Truman Show. To start off with, the main characters in both the stories transform themselves from being gullible like, to smart and curious characters who want to explore their surroundings. Who are you? This simplistic question can conjure a variety of answers depending on the person responding. The most intriguing and successful replies arise from those who respond with the ideal criteria described by Ramsdell (2010) in “Storytelling, Narration, and the ‘Who I Am’ Story”. Based on Ramsdell’s criteria for the “Who I Am” story, it is evident that writers employ similar aspects into their writing, as seen in Sedaris’ (2000) “ Me Talk Pretty One Day”, and in my personal literacy narrative, “The Weight of Clinkscale: A Learning Experience”.…

In Hamlet , Shakespeare utilizes the characterization of the ghost of King Hamlet to convey significant and climatic messages to the protagonist who , based on the information that is provided , carries out major plot - shifting developments . This leads the reader to make the connection to all that the protagonist does within the text and the initial meeting between the younger and elder Hamlet . It could be fairly speculated that the actions that are taken by the ghost of King Hamlet's character bring about the death of five separate people , all of whom died with different relations to King Hamlet . The ghost's appearance sets the revenge plot into motion , but it also delays the play ' s action . Shakespeare uses this method of solemnity…
