Rape is a serious health issue in America. According to http://katehon.com/, the United States is the number one country with the highest rape crime. But what is the proper definition of rape? Rape is any unwanted sexual contact with the use of force or the threat of using force, without the person’s consent. Penetration can be through a body part or a foreign object. An attempted (not completed) sex act is also included under the classification of rape. Keeping a consistent definition of rape is important to monitor the incidence and examine trends over time. A women has a one in six chance compared to a man only having a one in thirty-three chance of experiencing an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. Forty-three percent of rapes will occur between the hours of six p.m. to midnight, twenty-four percent will occur between midnight and six a.m., and the other thirty-three percent will take place between six a.m. and six p.m. Victims can also be children. Fifteen percent of sexual assault victims are under the age of 12. Girls between the ages of 16 and 19 are four times more likely to have experienced rape or attempted rape. The perpetrators are more likely to target someone they know. Only approximately thirty percent of perpetrators are strangers. Rape is one of the most underreported crimes in America, with sixty-eight percent of rapes going unreported.
