Traditions such as birthdays differ from culture to culture. For Spanish girls their extra special birthday is the Quinceanera, which is her 15th birthday. Historically, Aztecs started this tradition around 500 B.C. and to this day Spanish communities honor this wonderful rite of passage. A Quinceanera is a formal birthday party for the birthday girl. It used to be a celebration of when a girl has become a woman and now can accept womanly responsibilities including marriage. Today, Spanish communities still have this celebration but it is to honor the rite of passage from a girl to a young lady. Unlike a wedding however there is no garter but exchange of girl shoes for women shoes, such as high heels that her father will kneel and change for her. Also it is common for if the birthday girl has sister that she give them a doll or toy preferably one of her own to signify the putting away of childish things. The birthday girl’s parents then present her with certain gifts to honor her as a woman such as a ring or bracelet to signify the circle of life, earrings to remind her to always keep her ears up to God, and a cross or rosary with a prayer book.
Just like a wedding the birthday girl will get a father daughter dance all to themselves while everyone watches. The birthday girl will also get a dance with her escort called a chambelan. After these two dances, her damas and chamberlians will enter the floor for a dance as a group. This is very different from Americans who celebrate a “sweet 16” birthday.
American’s for this birthday may have a bigger celebration then normal to signify this as a special birthday. Unlike the Spanish communities this is not a formal occasion for most people depending on the plans as to where the birthday party will take place. There aren’t any big historical traditions unless it is something that occurs within that particular family. It is still an extra special birthday just not as elaborate as the beautiful
