If I encountered a friend in the hallway who was about to take Psychology 101, I would tell her all about what psychology is and why it is so useful. Psychology involves scientifically studying both a person’s behavior and their mental processes. It involves a scientific attitude that is interested in asking and answering questions. Next, I would tell my friend that psychology is important because it seeks to understand others. Psychology helps humans to improve as psychologists learn more about humans’ behavior and mental processes. Psychology helps me by furthering my understanding of myself and other people. I would stress to my friend that taking Psychology 101 will help you not only in your career, but also in life in general. I would tell my friend that the most interesting thing I learned in my psychology class was the experiments that psychologists have done over time. I would highlight one particular experiment that we learned about involving conformity. I would tell her that when we studied social psychology, we looked at an experiment called the “Asch Effect”. The Asch experiment involved a group of participants deciding which line of the three choices was the same length as the original line. To test if a single person would go against the crowd, Asch had all but one participant agree to pick the same wrong answer. The experiment showed that the single person would often knowingly choose the wrong answer just so they would conform to others. I found this so interesting because it illustrated just how powerful conformity is on humans. I would tell my friend that the hardest thing that I learned was classical conditioning. I would tell her that I had difficulty identifying conditioned responses and stimuli and unconditioned responses and stimuli in particular
