“Failures of Prison Reentry”
The prison reentry problems seem to have brought major issues as time moves forwards, there has been programs set to help with the current issues but their needs to be further done to ease the transition in to society. There are several problems that have been considered when looking further into prison reentry, such as the increasing numbers of re-arrests, re-convictions, and the mental problems that has been the result of the stress the ex-offenders endures due to the failure of transition (Justicepolicy.org). When ex-offenders are incarcerated as well as before their convictions they faced several stresses that could maintain their affects once released, such as mental health problems, history of sexual abuse, substance abuse, unstable family life, lack of education and work experience (Cole, and Gertz, 2013). Sadly, 67.5 percent of those who were released fell back in to previous behaviors which resulted in them being reconvicted, these ex-offenders ended up serving an additional 3 years in the prison facilities (Visher and Travis, 2003). The main problems that exist with reentry is based on recent research which in turn discussed that prisoner lives after release is based solely on recidivism but ignores the reality that recidivism directly affects post prison reintegration and adjustments (Visher, and Travis, 2003).
