Music Review

Saturday October 9, 2016; a friend and I walked into the CSM multimedia room prepared to listen a piano concert. I noticed that a majority of my peers at the concert were over the age of 55 and have been to one of the performer previous shows (which they stated during intermission). Brian Ganz started off by giving the audience a brief lesson about his history. Mr. Ganz is a jubilant and free spirited person; who love chopin (king of etudes) and only started playing piano at the age of 9 years old. He became a wonderful player by the help of his marvelous teachers and supportive parents.
Mr. Ganz started off a beautiful piece called, Three Nocturnes, Op. 9. I would consider this first piece as programed music, because it’s

Ganz returned by to the piano and answered any questions. Then he proceeded to talk about the next piece and it 's called Twelve Etudes, Op 9 this whole would be categorised as absolute music. The first etude (No. 1 in C Major) he mentioned that his left hand will only high octaves and the right hand open arpeggios. You can hear it with the fast paced, repeat notes that are being played throughout. I want to say that its doctrine of affection because it 's keeping the same mood throughout the whole piece. No. 2 in A Major this one sound quite difficult to play, this one like the first had repeated notes and it also centro by gracefully getting higher in different parts of the song. No. 3 in E Minor; the amplitude in this piece was much softer than the other previously played pieces but I wasn 't able to pick up much from this piece because if the commotion that was going on (a baby fell and started crying). No. 4 in C-sharp minor was one that i liked, it was polyphonic, because it sounded like it was racing. No. 5 in - flat Major (“Black Keys”) all 8 fingers are being used and both thumbs. In this piece he was using his thumbs and his right hand had nothing black keys and it still sound polyphonic, because of how fast it was going, but it sounded happy. No. 6 in E-flat Minor sound strange, dark, sad, and is used for voicing exercises. This pieces had more of a soulful undertone. No.7 in C Major he mentioned that this piece help strengthen the bridges

“This work tells the night of transition of a beloved familiar of mine, on a night in a hospital. With no dramatic or compassionate intention, I created "La Noche" to amplify our separation and our unitive annihilation, like a song whispered in the ear of the one who goes, and the one who stays. An ode to everything we experience on this loss, and everything that we know stay forever when the body of the beloved is gone. This song should be heard by night, in absolute darkness with headphones, to obey the sound after initial resistance.…

It is with great pleasure that I write in support of Dr. Qing Jiang for consideration for The Samuel L. Williams Endowed Professorship in Music. Dr. Jiang is a very worthy candidate for the award, having distinguished herself amongst Department of Music junior faculty by her impressive record of national and international concert appearances, and by her exceptional teaching of piano and chamber music. Dr. Jiang’s CV details her diverse career as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative pianist (a term replacing “accompanist” to describe the role the pianist plays in a instrumental or vocal recital performance). I am impressed not only by the high status venues that have sponsored her performances, such as New York’s Lincoln Center,…

Listening Assignment 8. Going into Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, 4th movement, March to the Scaffold the composer takes the audience into his deep dreams and illustrates with his music on every exact emotion and thought we contained. This specific piece contains a big orchestra and with that each individual instrument takes a step into depicting the exact thoughts of the writer. Looking more into the piece the 4th movement specifically has followed the other 3 before it on his thought towards his partner, however with this movement the writer now has taken a darker light on things and turn the piece more disturbing.…

On January 31, 2016, I attended a classical musical concert performed by Chanticleer. The concert was held in the Halton Theater at Central Piedmont Community College. The audience was dressed very casually and most of the people were elderly. This was the first classical concert I have attended, I choose to write about this concert because it’s the one that I liked the most if I had to choose between all the concert that I attended. Chanticleer is a male classical vocal a cappella ensemble comprises twelve men, that include two basses, one baritone, three tenors, and six countertenors (three altos and three sopranos). They mostly know about their interpretations of Renaissance music, but it also performs a wide repertoire of jazz, gospel,…

Upon attending the International Chamber Music Festival Concert, a certain ecstatic vibe could be felt as the performers walked on stage with their musical instruments. The virtuoso’s performed in pieces that contained trios, duets, and quintets; showing the concentration they required when listening to each other. When working on Chamber Music, much of the melody jumps around from instrument to instrument, show casing various solos and much of the instruments having to coincide with each other to carefully listen for the melody. The first performance, was from Mosaics, by Eric Ewazen, only introducing the first movement: I. Barcarolle. The performers Dr. Susan Berdahl (flute), Dr. Xiaohu Zhou (bassoon), and Dr. James Moyer (marimba), all played outstandingly and show cased exactly how Chamber Music is meant to be played.…

James Tenney 's "Having Never Written a Note for Percussion" felt calm and collected within the first few minutes. It reminded me of an electronic piece I composed for another class. However, about five minutes in, I became suddenly aware of the volume and sense of restlessness the composition was bestowing within me. There wasn 't much movement, pitch wise, and it felt like a wave of sound was crashing into me. The contrast between the barely audible beginning to the loud crescendo was so gradual and smooth, I almost didn 't realize the piece was getting louder until my ears couldn 't quite stand the sound anymore.…
