Most of the high schools in U.S. don’t have an open campus during lunch. However, high schools should have open campus lunches for several reasons. The lunches that the high schools provide are really unhealthy, cafeterias are packed, and having the freedom to go wherever you want during lunch would give the students a nice short break from the school day.
Open campus lunches would be a great idea for high schools because it would give the students the freedom to decide themselves what they want to eat. “Two out of three students who eat school lunches regularly are overweight or obese. According to the unhealthy school lunches statistics released by experts, children who eat school lunches may have high bad cholesterol or LDL than kids who bring their lunch along with them. “ ("Unhealthy School Lunches Statistics") Some of the students want to eat healthy and if high schools had open campus lunches, it would give all the students more options to foods. Adapting open campus lunch to high schools would prepare the students to that next step in their lives and when going to for example college they would have already had some experience about open campus. ”95 percent of the students use the privilege responsibly” (Saslow "Schools Split on 'Open Campus'") Also, the students would become more mature and learn to take care of themselves since their parents aren’t always going to be there to look after them. Some parents might be concerned about the safety of the students but if they would really think about it, they would probably realize that letting them out late at night is even more risky than letting them go and get their own lunch during a school
