“Florida’s state funded mental hospitals are supposed to be safe places to house and treat people who are a danger to themselves or others. But years of neglect and $100 million in budget cuts have turned them into treacherous warehouses were violence is out of control and patients can’t get the care they need.” (Anton et al). As described in this quote, Florida’s mental hospitals have turned into dangerous places for employees and patients. New levels of violence and major budget cuts have turned hospitals upside down, and thanks to these muckrakers it is now exposed to the public. Muckraking does still exist as demonstrated by Leonora LaPeter Anton in her series of articles published by the Tampa Bay Times (Anton et al). The series of articles has three authors, the first one being Leonora LaPeter Anton. Leonora LaPeter Anton studied journalism at the University of Illinois. The information was exposed thanks to three talented muckrakers, Leonora LaPeter Anton, Michael Braga, and Anthony Cormier. They have exposed that the more budgets are cut the more violence increases. Budget cuts have reduced the amount of employees working in the mental hospitals, creating an unsafe environment for patients and staff. This muckraking piece has exposed the dangers of this to the public, and lead to more papers publishing the articles to raise awareness. Thanks to these muckrakers Florida’s Governor, Rick Scott, has requested for money to buy new things like cameras and alarms (Anton et al).
