Within Lord of the Flies by William Golding there are many topics that can be found and elaborated on within this dystopian novel. There is one common topic that is brought up throughout the novel that is extremely prevalent. The topic is patriotism, which is supporting your government during times of war, no matter what. However, in the Lord of the Flies by William Golding case it is the opposite of patriotism. Jack character shows non-patriotism because he goes against Ralph’s leadership style and even makes an attempt to rally up the boys to impeach Ralph. Jack strongly goes against the leadership of Ralph throughout the dystopian novel even when Ralph is looking out for the best interest of the boys. Going against leadership and rebellion is an important fundamental to notice when reading Lord of the Flies by William Golding.

"I ought to be chief," said Jack with simple arrogance, "because I'm chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp." (Chapter 1). When the boys choose Ralph over Jack, Jack was furious because he was always awarded leadership back home. The war between who should be chief and who shouldn’t didn’t end too good, leaving an ever lasting tension between the two young boys causing future problems between them. Ralph believed in order and structure; his main goal was to have the boys work together to create a society similar to the one they had known before they crashed onto the island. Unlike Ralph, Jack primarily wanted to hunt and play. Jack even disregarded Ralph's warnings about the fire. Jack went against Ralph in a harsh time when he was seeking rescue for them all. Ralph is up against the war of survival and finding rescue but Jack is blinded by the fact and perhaps could care less about
