No Time Like the Past
The Jazz train had their debut October 18th in the ICC Performing Arts Center at 7:30pm. The ensemble consisted of 17 members and each instrument part was covered. The band played 12 stellar tunes with a few flashbacks to the Count Basie band. The tunes were No Time Like the Present and Full Time.
This ensemble had three pieces which, showcased each wind section. My two favorite pieces were In a Brazilian Bone Tone and Marvin gets meaner. The piece had a few soloists, the tenor player had a lot of emotion expressed which played off the rhythm section blending together. The trombone player was bright in his tone, worked the horn from the high register and down to the lower registered and had a good drive. The guitarist showcased a lot of sounds that we spoke of in class such as slides, growls, and bends. The final soloist Mo, was rocking! He filled the room, he was cooking through scales and knew what he was doing end ended the piece on a screaming note.

The opening bit of the song started with the bass player walking while the drummer gave the pulse as the piano player was soloing. During the alto solo, the player really showcased what blues was about, the player utilized falls, bends, and glisses. There were 9 soloist’s in all the last two that stood out were the bass player and guitar. The bass player transitioned very smooth and the guitar player was using bends and slides while he was going to
