As the head of the executive branch, the president of the United States, holds a number of powers provided by the Constitution. These powers granted to the president are clearly outlined in Article II of the Constitution, and are referred to as formal powers. Formal powers granted to the President are the power to sign or veto legislation, command the armed forces, the ability to pardon, the power to appoint officials, negotiate treaties with foreign nations, and to convene Congress. Along with the powers provided by the Constitution, the President also has a number of informal or implied powers. The President's informal powers are not explicitly written out, but are inferred or implied by the Constitution. Informal or implied powers are necessary for the government run properly. The Executive Office consists of the White House staff, National Security Team, Council of Economic Advisors, and Office of Management and Budget. The White House staff are the people that work directly with the President. A crucial component of the President’s staff is the Chief of Staff, who is responsible for seeing that the legislative goals of the President are carried out. The Chief of Staff is also considered to be one of the closest advisor to the President. The National Security team deals with domestic, foreign, and military policies affecting national security issues. It is composed of the President, Vice President, Secretary of Defense, Secretary of State. The Council of Economic Advisors, provides the President with crucial information on economic policy, essentially their are responsible for advising on economic matters, such as unemployment and taxes.
