there are sled dogs being mistreated in the Iditarod race? During the race some dogs die and
others get very sick. It’s a cruel race, where the Mushers beat their dogs with whips to get them to
listen or move. Mushers will do other things to their dogs including drag them, kick them, and throw
them.
The Musher make money using their sled dogs in the Iditarod race. In the race Mushers run the
dogs through 17 different checkpoints over 1,000 miles in Alaska, from Anchorage to Nome. This is a
very grueling race, ran over various terrains and treacherous weather conditions. Each team in the race
start with 16 dogs. At the end of the race there can be as few as 5 dogs left at the finish line in order to

Training races, as short at 100 miles, can cause many stressors on the dog’s body, mind,
and spirit. Broken bones, lung damage, kidney failure, and stomach ulcers can happen to name a few. If
these problems can occur during training, imagine what more than 1,000 miles can do to a dog. The
dogs are at times forced to continue the race while injured or sick. Many sled dogs will have
nervous breakdowns from the stress.
The sled team arriving in 1st place will receive $75,000. There are also prizes given out to the
1st 24 finishers of the race. Promotional prizes may often be given out as well. Including a new Dodge
truck to the 1st place winner. Are these prizes and recognition worth the permanent damage done to
the sled dogs?
Many Mushers think the Iditarod race is for a good cause, and in 1925 it was. The 1st team
raced with life saving medication from Anchorage to Nome to save the village from a Diphtheria
pandemic. Today, my belief is that this race brings unnecessary cruelty and pain to the sled dogs
