Essay On Iditarod

The Iditarod is called, “The Last Great Race on Earth”. I question why that is the slogan when

there are sled dogs being mistreated in the Iditarod race? During the race some dogs die and

others get very sick. It’s a cruel race, where the Mushers beat their dogs with whips to get them to

listen or move. Mushers will do other things to their dogs including drag them, kick them, and throw

them.

The Musher make money using their sled dogs in the Iditarod race. In the race Mushers run the

dogs through 17 different checkpoints over 1,000 miles in Alaska, from Anchorage to Nome. This is a

very grueling race, ran over various terrains and treacherous weather conditions. Each team in the race

start with 16 dogs. At the end of the race there can be as few as 5 dogs left at the finish line in order to

win. The average race last

Training races, as short at 100 miles, can cause many stressors on the dog’s body, mind,

and spirit. Broken bones, lung damage, kidney failure, and stomach ulcers can happen to name a few. If

these problems can occur during training, imagine what more than 1,000 miles can do to a dog. The

dogs are at times forced to continue the race while injured or sick. Many sled dogs will have

nervous breakdowns from the stress.

The sled team arriving in 1st place will receive $75,000. There are also prizes given out to the

1st 24 finishers of the race. Promotional prizes may often be given out as well. Including a new Dodge

truck to the 1st place winner. Are these prizes and recognition worth the permanent damage done to

the sled dogs?

Many Mushers think the Iditarod race is for a good cause, and in 1925 it was. The 1st team

raced with life saving medication from Anchorage to Nome to save the village from a Diphtheria

pandemic. Today, my belief is that this race brings unnecessary cruelty and pain to the sled dogs

involved. I consider dogs to be man’s best friend, so I say, “Please don't harm your

It is an autobiography of a very important portion of Paulsen's life. I have only heard what it must be like to run the Iditarod and I do not clearly understand Paulsen's fascination with the race. I have never been riding with sled dogs before although ,after reading this book, I would like to. I can only somewhat relate to the relationship Paulsen has with his dogs. I have pets of my own that I care for as well.…

When the first pit bulls came to America by English and Irish immigrants, they were a respected breed”. Also in the Blog it says that “They were kept as hunters and guardians, as well as herders and pets” .PitBulls loved their owners and will do anything to protect them. One thing that I disagree with is that in the Newspaper Editorial source four it said that “New outlets consistently tell animal control officers that they will not cover a dog attack unless the situation was caused by a pit bull ” . I think that this is unfair because one there are many other types of dogs that are dangerous and that hurt people, and the animal officers won’t attend to the problem.…
