Introduction
Affordable housing in the United States has increasingly become an issue, specifically since the most recent recession in 2008. Living in New York is a huge attraction, where people invariably want to live. However, there are many groups of people that cannot afford the housing that is needed to live a healthy lifestyle. Low-income families constantly struggle with this issue, causing increased stress on family dynamics. While there are potentially many groups that are affected by housing affordability in New York, I would like to focus on the subgroups of African Americans, Hispanics and Immigrants. A study shows that families that are paying more than 30 percent of their income for housing are considered cost burdened and may have difficulty affording necessities such as food, clothing, transportation and medical care (Affordable Housing, n.d.). Around 12 million renter and homeowner households are paying more than 50 percent of their annual incomes for housing.
