Essay On Homophobia

Homophobia Homophobia is a well-known term in today’s world. The origin of homophobia is unknown but the term is credited to George Weinberg who came up with it in the late 1960’s and further publicized and discussed it in a book in 1972. Homophobia can be broken down into two words, homo and phobia. Homo: homosexuals. Phobia: an extreme or irrational fear or something. Altogether, homophobia is an extreme or irrational fear of homosexuals. Fearing or discriminating people because of what sex they are attracted to is unacceptable. Major factors that can cause homophobia include an individual’s environment and upbringing, personal conflict about their own homosexual desires and religion. How an individual is raised and where they lived plays a huge part in how they feel about homosexuals. If their parents are homophobic, there’s a high chance that they will also grow up to be homophobic. If their parents are accepting of homosexuals, they will most likely be accepting of homosexuals when they grow up. The same concept goes for the environment they lived in. Other Catholics should be more concerned about this issue because as Jesus clearly stated, other than loving the Lord our God with all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all our strength, there is no greater commandment than loving your neighbour as you love yourself. Homophobia contradicts this mandate because homophobia is not loving your neighbor as yourself. As Catholics, we are expected to respect all human beings without discrimination and prejudice because we are all equal in the eyes of God.
