What is one way that you, as a nurse, can take a more active role in health promotion/disease prevention with your patients and your community? As a nurse, one of the most effective changes I can make is to promote regular physical exercise for my patients and my community. Physical exercise not only reduces the risk for chronic ailments such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, but it also reduces anxiety and depression symptoms. As nursing is focused on total wellness, encouraging physical activity is an excellent way to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Today, chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and COPD are the leading causes of mortality morbidity. These chronic diseases can be reduced dramatically through health promotion and disease prevention strategies. In such, health care must be focused on educating the public about exercise, diet, smoking cessation, and stress reduction. The doctor’s focus is on the curing of diseases through medicines and treatment, so the responsibility of health promotion falls upon nursing. Nursing is a profession that focuses on the total well-being of the patient, so it is part of our job function to increase the overall health of the patient through health education. I take this responsibility seriously and during all interactions with patients I assess for education needs for the patient and his family. A detailed assessment of the patient’s health promotion attitudes and knowledge is the basis of my health promotion care education.
