Health and wellness are essential for optimal well-being. According to the World Health Organization health and wellness is, “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity” (Edlin & Golanty, 4). Health affects every aspect of life. Authors of Health and Wellness Edlin and Golanty state, “Health is not static, it is a dynamic process that takes into account all the decisions we make daily, such as the foods we eat and the amounts of exercise we get…” (Edlin & Golanty, 4). Having a balanced diet and a fitness routine will help enhance everyday life. The components of health and wellness are flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular fitness, nutrition, and body composition. Together, these components help you assess your level of fitness.

The main concept of body composition is that it differentiates overweight from overfat. However, it does not differentiate lean mass from fat mass. This is why some people who are overall healthy are considered 1overweight or obese because their muscle mass is not being accounted for. Methods of measuring body composition are: hydrostatic weighing, dual x-ray absorptiometry, plethysmography, skinfold measurement, and bioelectrical impedance. These methods range in reliability, validity, and complexity. Hoffman says, “The simple techniques should not be rejected because they appear unsophisticated” (Hoffman). For example, the skinfold measurement is simple and easy to administer but gives a very informative assessment.
