He shows this through Juliet after she meets Romeo for the first time and learns he’s a Montague. Juliet thinks,“My only love sprung for my only hate!/ Too early seen unknown too late/ Prodigious birth of love it is to me/ that I must love a loathed enemy” (1.5.136-143). As she says, “My only love sprung from my only hate” she explains that the only man she loves is the son of the only man she is forced to hate. Later on in the play Benvolio shares with Romeo the depressing news that Mercutio was killed. Benvolio says with sorrow,“O Romeo, Romeo, brave Mercutio’s dead!/ That gallant spirit hath aspired the clouds,/ which too untimely here did scorn the earth” (3.1.110-113). Benvolio is expressing that “brave Mercutio is dead” and that his brave spirit is in heaven now or “that gallant spirit hath aspired the cloud”. At the end Romeo and Benvolio agree that Mercutio died too early and unfairly. Especially when Benvolio says, “too untimely here did scorn the earth” As Romeo’s best friend Mercutio fought for Romeo and ended up dying in the process of protecting his best friend; he sacrificed his life for a loved one. He loved Romeo so much and was aware of how much Romeo loved Juliet that he took action before thinking. Their strong friendship and their love for one another was so strong that all Mercutio wanted to do was protect Romeo. Mercutio decided to risk his life to protect Romeo and prevent Romeo from losing his life. Another example that love can lead to sacrifice is obviously conveyed through Romeo and Juliet. During the last scene as Romeo drinks the poison to be with his love; Juliet in heaven. As he drinks, he yells, “Here’s to my love! (drinks the poison)/ O true apothecary, thy drugs are quick./ Thus with a kiss I die” (5.3.129-131). In Romeo’s speech to Juliet after he sees her dead, he preaches,” thy drugs are quick./ Thus with a kiss I die”. He means these drugs work quickly. The drugs he took to end his own life. The love between Romeo and Juliet was so strong that Romeo could not think about anything else except for the fact that he is not allowed to be with her.
