Sororities and fraternities have been challenging their rightful purposes since they were created in the 1700s. They were created for the purpose of educational success, scholarships, and opportunities that may have not been available to students not involved. Throughout the years, Greek life has helped students to make charitable contributions, connections in careers, and friendships. The one topic not specified in their prideful history would be hazing. There have been many accounts of hazing throughout the years of developing Greek structures. Many were arrested for underaged drinking, some have been emotionally destroyed, and many have died.

Chapters are at risk of losing national insurance coverage if someone is hurt because of policy violation, such as hazing or underaged drinking. A specific instance would be when Phi Kappa estimated it had handled 41 claims from 1990 to 2000 paying over three million dollars for injuries and deaths. There was even one scenario where they had to pay over a million dollars for a Greek house that was burnt down during a house fire at the University of California at Berkeley. This event ended in three deaths. The true meaning of the Greek organizations has even be questioned by alumni that are threatening to withhold donations if they are unhappy with how chapters are treated (McMurtrie).
