“Only 8% of workers in private sectors benefit from paid leave” (Sylvia Guendelman 1). If you work, you should be able to take time off to take care of a newborn, both mothers and fathers. Not having paid leave makes people lead towards not being able to take time off, especially for men. All states need to have paid leave for women and men who have just had a child. If parents take time off and spend it with their child, it creates a stable home environment for the baby. The amount of times you spend with your family builds your relationships. The more time you have with them helps you bond. “Through time together. Families become stronger”, So when a new family member comes, born or adopted, its better to go ahead and spend as much time with them as possible (America 1). “It's hard to have a relationship as a family if you have to go back to work right after having a small child” (America 1). During the 12 month paid period, employees can combine their two 12 weeks, so they can take up to 26 weeks off. Once they use that leave though, a new leave year will begin (J.J Keller 1). You would be able to use FMLA if you gave birth or adopted a child, are taking care for an ill family member, or you yourself are very ill (J.J Keller). To be eligible for FMLA You would have to be working for your employers for 12 months, and have worked at least 1,250 hours and worked in the US where more than 50 employees are employed (J.J Keller). FMLA applies to “private sectors employers who employed 50 or more employees in 20 or more workweeks” (J.J Keller 2).
