Gender roles in any society no matter how concrete and evident they seem, are complex. Gender roles may not always be black and white. Many early ethnographic studies tried to establish that biology was the cause for gender differences, it is now believed that it has more to do with cultural conditioning within cultural constructs. Some studies further depicted women as "gatherers and innate nurturers". The Sacks 1982 and Zihlman 1989 studies indicated women were seen to be subordinate in many cultures to men. Other studies such as Lundberg and Pollak 1996 believe that the level of submission is biased on what is called bargaining power. They claim there are a number of things to consider when determine bargaining power. 1) cultural background 2) The level of assimilation into the US culture was also investigated 3) amount of Money possessed by either individual ; 4) Age ; 5) completed years of schooling. These studies raised interest as to whether women are mostly submissive to men are the other factors to take into consideration, or is it that anthropologist studying these cultures have some bias. They all believed that he may not agree so they manipulate him into believing it 's his idea. Proving that women in such a culture can and will use the wit as strength. This tactic may have been perfected over generations or it may have always been the case to establish bargining power. They may have always had the mentality that it doesn 't matter if men think they are in charge as long as the women know they can impact their choices and the decisions they make, or this may have been something that they have adapted through some as assimulation into American culture
