Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by a widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues (). It is sometimes referred to as “the invisible disease”. There are only ways to relieve the pain and discomfort. In 2007 a prescription drug was developed specifically for fibromyalgia called Lyrica. It is the first FDA approved drug that can be prescribed to relieve the symptoms of fibromyalgia(). There are other prescriptions like Cymbalta and Savella than can also be used to treat symptoms of fibromyalgia(). Alternate treatments can be used to help relieve the pain. Massage has been one useful form of therapy to lessen the pain caused by fibromyalgia. Other treatment options are acupuncture, and visiting a chiropractor. Anti-depressants have also been used to treat fibromyalgia(). They help relieve the pain and fatigue associated with FM. Sleeping medications also are used to promote restful sleep.
