Professional Counselors and Evidence Based Practice
For a long time, there has been a debate in the counseling world with regards to evidence and non-evidence based practice. Each of the practice has its own unique way of achieving best results while on the other hand each has limitations. While evidenced based practice may be advocated for by most counselors, some professionals refer to its limitations as the main reason for not using it. Since counseling takes place within enclosed rooms for confidentiality purposes, it is significant to appreciate the fact that both evidence and non-evidence based practices are being used by professional counselors. Evidence based practice is still an expanding field and much research is being carried in the field. My main contribution will be to personally advocate for some of the unproven procedures to be functional and created as standard procedures in some cases. To ensure that people don’t divert from evidence based practice, I will also advocate for flexible operational procedures that allow practitioners to use both methods for better services.
In conclusion, both evidence and non evidence based practices are proven to yield positive results. On the negative side, both practices are also likely to cause harm based on their limitations. For good results, experienced practitioners use a blend of both. To however impact positively on evidence based practice, researchers have to study individual elements of non-evidence based practice and incorporate them into universal functional procedures.
