Endocrine System
The endocrine system has to do with the hormones of the body. Hormones are chemical messengers that travel throughout the bloodstream to other tissues. These hormones are secreted by endocrine glands throughout the body. Hormones help with the functions of certain organs and glands and help with digestion, muscle contraction, sex hormones for reproduction, sleep, and much more. They can really dictate how chemicals in the body react. The major function of the endocrine system is to maintain the body’s homeostasis. There are three different types of hormones and they are amino acid derivatives, peptide hormones, and lipid derivatives. Amino acid derivatives are related to amino acids and are associated with the hormone known as melatonin that is secreted by the pineal gland. Peptide …show more content…
These glands and organs are controlled by stimulation from the nervous system, chemical receptors in the blood, and hormones produced by other glands. Hormones can only affect cells that have the correct receptors and the levels of hormones can be regulated by the nervous system and many other factors. If a cell is exposed to high levels of hormones they can begin to reduce the number of receptors produced and this can begin to cause problems.
Without the endocrine system the body would not be able to function properly. Pathologies involved with this system can become very serious. Although the glands in this system are very important we are able to live without some with the help of medicine to produce the hormones. For example if someone has thyroid cancer they are able to have their thyroid removed but would have to take the hormonal medicine for the rest of their
