Well, some of us may or may not know but we all have scripts for what we do in our every day life routine. In the case of driving, day by day we develop our own driving behaviors and start getting used to it, so it becomes automatic. Therefore we are no longer deliberate them.
Psychologists define this phenomenon as Automaticity
When we go through automaticity, our tasks become simpler and faster because we don’t use much of our attention recourses. …show more content…
In some cases our scripts can be considered positive but in other cases it could also be negative. For instance, in stereotyping, have you ever drove on the road and noticed the car in front of you drives really slow? Then when you over take it, you notice it's a female driver so you think to yourself “No wonder why she’s driving slow, it’s because she's a female driver”.
There are biases in our driving psychology that changes our acts towards the others on the road. If we sit and think of the number of assumptions we actually make about drivers based on their ethnicity, sex, age, type of car and so on, we would conclude that we judge others by the image we create
But the question is, how do these judgmental acts interfere with driving?
We can see that scripts can affect us emotionally and intellectually. This creates negative feelings towards other drivers who make our driving behavior irrational.
Automaticity has benefits, but it could also lead us to risky situations. With time it becomes a routine, we forget to do many things while driving, such as checking road traffic, checking our speed limit and even checking out for others on the road.
According to researchers, people can overcome their automaticity by trying different routines. In the case of driving, people could choose different lanes and roads to make them aware and
