The first reason that many see as proof of how the justice system has failed, is that people of color receive unfair sentences because of their race. In 1905 Ed Johnson was accused of sexually assaulting a white female and was sentenced to death by an all white jury. According to innocence project.org, Johnson was arrested for sexually assaulting the female. The female was knocked out by a leather strap. Ed Johnson only became a suspect when a witness said that they saw him carrying the leather belt. Ed Johnson on the other hand denied owning one. This piece of evidence proves that first, a black man wrongfully was accused of sexually assaulting a white female, secondly, a witness stated that he had a leather belt when Johnson denied having one and lastly, he was sentenced death by an all white jury. Last but not least, once the U.S. Supreme Court granted a “stay of execution”, a group of people went into the jail and brutally killed Ed Johnson. This shows how __________. According to nytimes.com, Wen Ho Lee was accused of espionage. He was accused of stealing the design of America’s most advanced nuclear weapon. But, prosecutors were never able to connect him to espionage. This was racial profiling against asian americans. This tells us that the American legal system is not only fair but racially profiles people. This calls the american legal system out. A second example is when 4 african americans were accused of robbing a woman at gunpoint. According to Civil Liberty.about.com, they stated that the boys robbed a woman at gunpoint on March 22, the night of mob violence in downtown Louisville. After 70 days in jail the boys were free from guilt. The boys did accept the apology from the mayor of louisville, but they believed that the police racially profiled the african americans. The gGood thing is that they did receive 1.5 million dollars from the city. This says that America is judging african americans when they are looking for one specific african american.
