Introduction
Alcohol poisoning kills 6 people everyday and Tobacco use takes the life of 1,300 people per day. On the other hand, smoking marijuana alone has not killed a single person. Marijuana is nontoxic and cannot cause deaths by overdose. However, it does negatively affect a person's health and behavior, and is proven to have a correlation with crime rates. Over the past several years of my life as a student, I have witnessed many strange things in school related to the use of marijuana. With just one person on drugs, it causes a ripple effect throughout the community and society, disgracing the community and giving it a bad reputation.
Furthermore, Decriminalization of marijuana could eventually lead to the decriminalization of other harmful drugs or all drugs altogether. Decriminalization of marijuana is slowly shifting our culture to more of an "anything goes" mentality. With decriminalization comes the legalization of drugs. Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia currently have laws legalizing marijuana in some form. Drugs like heroin, cocaine, and amphetamines, which we may view now as unacceptable for decriminalization and legalization may eventually be sold at drug stores.
I recently learned that Jasmine had dropped out of high school due to her drug addiction. That news, however, was not surprising to me and should not be surprising to you all as well. A student, like Jasmine, who is introduced to drugs at an early age usually view school as a waste of time and do not need an education to sell or be on drugs.
