The question of whether or not congressmen should face term limits similar to the President of the United States has been a burning question throughout American History. Congressmen should face term limits for a few reasons. They should face term limits due to a majority of the American people’s opinion on the issue , the fact that term limits would increase ideas coming through Congress, and to help prevents incumbent advantage. The most important reason behind imposing term limits is to limit congressional power and prevent professional politicians. Today many Americans that are for the imposition of term limits argue that many legislators are “professional politicians” and often do what is popular as opposed to what is right. Since the time of the Founding Fathers, a general consensus states that people, when given power, will eventually be corrupted by it. If Congress has term limits in place, their power will also be limited. Candidates would be more likely to run for office with the passion necessary to serve the people and would have to leave office before becoming corrupt by lobbyist groups. Under the current system, self-serving lawmakers and congressmen are often given more power in congress and receive committee appointments so that they can influence votes as political favors to others.
