What are cold packs used for?
1. Cold packs are often used to treat painful injuries, such as a sprain or to ease swelling from minor injuries; cold packs come in many different variations some are made of gel that turn into icepacks when stored in cold, dry places, others are designed to freeze when pressure is applied to the gel pack where no freezing is required, the cold pack is used to slow down the blood flow to an injury so it doesn’t potentially get any worse.
How the contents of instant cold packs help them work.
2. Instant hot and cold packs work by using chemicals that wither absorb a lot of heat quickly or release heat when absorbed in water, when a process absorbs a lot of heat it’s called an endothermic reaction ; when a process releases a lot of heat it’s called an exothermic reaction, the chemical ammonium nitrate Is quite often used in cold packs because it absorbs a lot of heat when soaked in water, water and …show more content…
3. Gel cold packs are often made of a non-pliable material often a plastic and contain ammonium nitrate apart from the difference being it’s in gel form this however does not mean you will not need to apply pressure to the gel pack to help it freeze and gain the properties of a cool pack, the process is very similar to the instant cool pack bar from not being instant and the endothermic reaction is not instant.
The advantages and disadvantages of using each cool pack.
4. The advantages of using instant cool packs is that they’re instant and the exothermic reaction will happen immediately however they cannot be reused unlike its counterpart the gel cool pack which will have to be frozen for a few hours before use meaning it isn’t exactly great for treating injuries that maybe need immediate attention unless one is already froze, these gel packs work by maintaining the cold gel for a long period of time so that they can treat injuries that do no necessarily need immediate
