Catheterization Appropriate nursing skill and great technology are required to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the patient in the catheterization laboratory. Having a critical care experience, basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) certification, and knowledge of sophisticated equipment such as (IABP) are required for competent care of the patients undergoing invasive cardiac procedures. A consequence of contrast medium directly after injection is myocardial depression. The contrast medium displaces oxygen-rich blood in the coronary arteries, which may cause the heart rate to decrease. At this point, the patient is instructed to cough to help clear the contrast medium (Moser, & Riegel, 2008). All vital signs are monitored and recorded at regular intervals according to hospital policy; all hemodynamic data are recorded for the left and right sides of the heart. Patient safety during a procedure is critical; guidelines for Sterility precautions and infections control are based on standard precautions for preventing infection in surgical wounds, to ensure proper catheterization technique, proper use of sterile equipment, and disposal of contaminated equipment is within the nursing scope of practice. The nurse monitors the environment to ensure appropriate cleaning, and maintenance of adequate ventilation. The nurse is responsible for checking for hemostasis; considering distal circulation, and peripheral pulses.
