When confined in a single space for a prolonged period of time, the lack of unrestricted movement and increase of boredom and loneliness begins to take a toll on animals’ mental stability. If ever released from captivity, whether being a zoo or factory farm, emotional shock prevents animals from living unaffected by what they previously endured. Self-clutching, rocking or pacing back and forth, and refusing to eat are telltale signs of psychological distress, especially in primates. In multiple situations, this behavior is often seen when viewing an animal enclosed in a zoo. Additionally, because animals are frequently neglected of communication with their own kind, isolation permanently obliterates them socially. They become so prone to living withdrawn from their natural environment that animals scarcely have the ability to interact normally, prompting them to live as outcasts and mentally unbalanced for the rest of their lives. …show more content…
Commonly, metal buildings restrict them indoors, with minimal access to sunlight and fresh air. The cages are rarely cleaned, causing the animals to lay in their own feces, mold to grow around the living areas, and bugs to appear. As a result, the likeliness of them contracting a disease is exceedingly high, and overcrowding makes the animals more susceptible to deadly infections at a faster rate. Also, due to the insufficient movement within a cage, growth is extremely painful, with their bodies having to adapt to the compact cage. Deformities in the animals’ bodies occur over time because of this and a painful disease known as arthritis, or inflammation of the bones will present itself as well. In brief, the state of the animals’ environment proves to be unhealthy and a substantial detriment to them both physically and
