The Breast's Shape
When looking at before pictures of a breast lift, you will notice a few things. The breast's droop is noticeable, often to severe levels. The nipple is usually near the bottom of the breast and often point in a downward direction. There is little to no skin beneath the nipple or areola when looking at the breast straight on. The tissue of the breast itself is stretched and often flat, especially in women with a smaller breast size.

Take an areolar breast lift as an example. This technique involves repositioning the areola and nipple to a higher position on the breast. The doctor does not remove any tissue and does not reshape the breast. This is where a vertical breast lift has the advantage. If a breast is sagging enough to require a lift, it is better to reshape the entire breast instead of just repositioning the nipple.
Another common technique is known as the inverted-T technique. This technique involves making an incision around the areola and vertically down under the curve of the breast. Another incision is made horizontally at the breast fold, making the shape of an inverted T. This technique creates more scarring and often involves a longer healing time.
