Beowulf is an epic story. It is a complete epic; the oldest surviving Germanic Epic as well as the longest and most important poem in Old English (Anglo). Scholars think the story originated around 500 AD (Notes). An epic story is a poem or story that is about a larger than life hero that goes on a long adventure and does heroic things. Example of an epic story besides Beowulf would be something like Star Wars, The Odyessy, or the movie Three-Hundred. An epic story consists of many different characteristics, all of which Beowulf contains. Beowulf contains strange words, called kennings. A kenning is when you put two or more words together and they serve as a symbol or metaphor for another word (Notes). Some examples of a kenning could be used for the word sun. Sun in kenning form would be called a candle of heaven. Another example of one is sword, they would be called light of battle. One more example is fate, they would call it wyrd, pronounced like the word weird. It also contains alliteration. Alliteration is the repetition of the same initial letter sound or group of sound in a series of words (Beowulf). One other thing is that it contains personification. Personification is giving animate characteristics to an inanimate object (Beowulf).
