Essay On Being A Firefighter

I am a woman. I am a firefighter. Oftentimes it feels like those two statements were never meant to be said together, but I say them proudly. Where are the big strong men?” This was actually said to me upon arriving at a scene to help a man back into his bed from the floor. I then felt I had to …show more content…
Being a firefighter, regardless of gender, is something to be proud of; but there is something about being a female firefighter that is empowering. Kids see me driving a fire engine through town and their eyes light up as they tug on their parents’ clothing while saying things like “wow, a girl fireman!” It makes me feel good to know I have a positive effect on others. The short stories, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Fireman’s Wife” by Richard Bausch have resonated with me after reading them this semester. I am able to draw similarities from what I’ve read and associate them with the story. Doing so made what I read capture my full attention and transport me into the story. Also, I discovered and tackled flaws in my own character in the process. I found both of these short stories to have been thought provoking and an interesting read as well.…

During the twenty-first century, the new challenges for female law enforcement would be breaching the blue wall. Not only do male officers have their opinions on female officers but also so does the public. Male officers often did not want policewomen as their partner because they wanted someone that would be tough enough and able to fight back, however some females also were not in favor of their sex. There was a study conducted by P.W. Remmington where he asked both male and female officers whether or not they would prefer a male or female partner, every female chose a male partner (23). (Goffman & Zaidman, 1977) Whenever it comes to the armed forces, women are regarded as equal to males, but they are not physically suited to have the same jobs. Specifically, females should not be drafted into the military similar to their male counterparts as they are generally not built to handle that type of intense combat. While some females may be physically strong enough to handle the physical requirements of combat, the average female is not thus…
